Is Ethereum halal?
Question context
Ethereum is the second largest cryptocurrency and the foundation of most DeFi activity. Community members asked for a direct scholarly ruling on ETH's permissibility.
CoinStudy's answer
Research opinion from the CoinStudy Sharia team. Not a fatwa.
Our Shariah Board Chairman reviewed the full Ethereum analysis and ruled: "Ethereum is functioning well and has brought genuine improvement to commerce and trade. It provides equal economic rights to both Muslim and non-Muslim society alike. The direct causes of prohibition are absent. For these reasons Ethereum is permissible." CoinStudy classifies ETH at 88 out of 100 Halal. The chairman's ruling confirms Ethereum's network infrastructure is permissible. Individual DeFi applications built on Ethereum require separate assessment.
