Is Prophet Market halal? The AI takes the other side of every trade instead of humans. Does trading against an AI change the Islamic ruling? Can I farm the airdrop by using the platform?
Question context
CoinStudy's answer
Research opinion from the CoinStudy Sharia team. Not a fatwa.
Prophet Market is Haram and the AI counterparty does not change this ruling. Both questions you raised, whether the AI makes it different and whether airdrop farming is permitted, have direct and honest answers that are worth understanding precisely.
On whether trading against an AI rather than humans changes the ruling, our Shariah Board Chairman Dr. Usman Quddus addressed this exact question in his ruling on Rain prediction markets and stated directly: the fundamental structure is based on Maysir, which is gambling, and the AI feature does not make any difference to the Sharia ruling. Prophet Market's own description of itself confirms why this ruling applies. The AI system takes the opposing side of every trade absorbing directional risk based on its probability estimates. Users stake real USDC on uncertain future outcomes. When the user's prediction is correct the AI's bankroll decreases by the user's profit. When incorrect the user's deposit decreases by the amount the AI profits. One party's gain is the other's loss on every single trade with an uncertain future outcome as the determining variable.
This is the precise financial structure Islamic finance identifies as Maysir. Replacing the human counterparty with a sophisticated AI model that uses ensemble outputs from six major AI systems makes the pricing more accurate and the resolution more transparent. It does not change what the participants are doing: staking capital on uncertain future outcomes where one party gains exactly what another loses. The intelligence of the counterparty is irrelevant to the compliance ruling on the financial relationship between them.
A useful parallel: if a casino replaced all its dealers with AI systems that could perfectly calculate optimal play, it would still be a casino. The sophistication of the house does not determine whether wagering against it is gambling.
On the airdrop farming question, the answer depends entirely on what activity earns the points. Unlike some platforms where genuinely free activities exist completely separate from the financial product, Prophet Market's entire product is the AI-counterparty prediction market trading itself. The platform documentation confirms that users who deposit gain the ability to create markets and trade. If earning airdrop points requires depositing USDC and placing prediction market trades against the AI, that activity is Haram regardless of whether your motivation is airdrop farming or profit-seeking. The airdrop motivation does not transform a gambling deposit into permissible activity.
If Prophet Market were to introduce genuinely free non-financial activities for point accumulation, such as community quests, educational content, or social tasks that require no USDC deposit and no prediction market trading whatsoever, those specific activities would be assessed separately on their own merits. At the time of this analysis no such free activity pathway is documented in Prophet Market's public materials.
The comparison to Pixie Chess helps clarify the distinction. Pixie Chess has a genuine free gameplay mode where you can play real chess with no money involved, completely separate from the financial tournament wagering. The free mode earns airdrop eligibility through genuinely permissible activity. Prophet Market does not have an equivalent free mode because the entire platform is the AI prediction market. There is no non-financial way to meaningfully use it.
The ruling is therefore straightforward. Do not use Prophet Market, do not deposit USDC, and do not trade on any Prophet Market prediction markets regardless of the airdrop potential. If a PROPHET token eventually launches CoinStudy will assess it at that point. Given that the token's value would necessarily be tied to prediction market trading volume on a platform whose core mechanism is Haram, the token would almost certainly maintain this classification.
