Is EUR CoinVertible EURCV halal? It is fully regulated under MiCA by Societe Generale ?
Question context
CoinStudy's answer
Research opinion from the CoinStudy Sharia team. Not a fatwa.
EUR CoinVertible is classified as Haram under CoinStudy's Halal Crypto Standard. Your question identifies the most important nuance in the entire assessment: does MiCA regulatory compliance from one of Europe's most prestigious banks create a meaningfully different Islamic finance profile compared to USDT? The honest answer is that MiCA compliance improves EURCV's conventional financial integrity significantly but does not change its Islamic finance classification because it cannot change its reserve structure.
Here is precisely why. MiCA regulation requires euro stablecoins to hold reserves in euro cash deposits and high-quality liquid assets. High-quality liquid assets in European banking regulation means ECB-eligible instruments including European government bonds such as German Bunds and French OATs, covered bonds, and other sovereign securities. These instruments generate coupon interest income. Euro cash deposits held at Societe Generale or other European banks earn the ECB overnight deposit rate. Both components of EURCV's reserve structure generate interest income for SG-FORGE as the issuing entity.
This is the same structural issue that makes USDT fail CoinStudy's screening. USDT holds US Treasury bills that pay interest to Tether. EURCV holds European government bonds and euro bank deposits that pay interest to SG-FORGE. The currency denomination differs, the issuer's regulatory standing differs enormously, and the transparency of reserve disclosure differs significantly. But the fundamental reserve mechanism is the same: the assets backing the stablecoin generate interest income for the issuer.
The key difference you have identified, that MiCA prohibits distributing yield to token holders, is real and meaningful. EURCV holders do not directly receive the interest income from the bond and deposit reserves. This passes the Guaranteed Interest red line at the token holder level, meaning EURCV is not the same as a DeFi yield product that directly pays predetermined interest returns to depositors. However the Ecosystem Riba Exposure red line asks whether the reserve structure generates interest income at all, not exclusively whether that income reaches the token holder directly. The reserves generate Riba income for SG-FORGE regardless of whether it flows onward to token holders.
The parallel to the US GENIUS Act is exact and important for Muslim investors to understand. The GENIUS Act mandates US Treasury bill reserves for dollar stablecoins. MiCA mandates bank deposits and high-quality securities for euro stablecoins. Both regulatory frameworks were designed to protect consumers and create stable, trustworthy digital currencies. Both simultaneously mandate the interest-bearing instruments that fail Islamic finance screening. EU regulatory compliance and Islamic finance compliance are moving in the same direction on transparency and consumer protection but remain structurally misaligned on whether reserves can include interest-bearing instruments.
Two specific 2026 developments compound the compliance concerns beyond the base reserve structure. EURCV is integrated into Morpho, a DeFi lending protocol CoinStudy classifies as Haram, for yield-earning vaults where depositors earn interest paid by borrowers. Muslim investors who deposit EURCV into Morpho vaults are engaged in Riba at two simultaneous levels. EURCV has also been deployed on Canton specifically to power repo financing workflows. Repo financing is an explicitly interest-bearing short-term lending instrument where the price differential between sale and repurchase constitutes interest.
Our Shariah Board Chairman Dr. Usman Quddus's ruling on fiat-backed stablecoins applies to EURCV as a structurally similar instrument. His ruling confirms conditional permissibility for using EURCV purely as a medium of exchange for permissible commercial transactions with caution about the interest-bearing backend. His ruling explicitly states that if the stablecoin is used in haram dealings it becomes haram, which directly addresses the Morpho vault and repo financing applications.
For Muslim investors in Europe who need euro-stable digital assets for genuine payment and settlement purposes, using EURCV as a pure medium of exchange with no yield-generating activity is conditionally permissible under the Chairman's framework with appropriate caution. Depositing into Morpho, participating in repo financing workflows, or any yield-generating activity with EURCV is definitively Haram and must be avoided completely.
