Is Arcus DEX halal? It trades tokenized stocks with zero fees but also offers perpetual futures with 50x leverage.
Question context
CoinStudy's answer
Research opinion from the CoinStudy Sharia team. Not a fatwa.
Arcus as a platform is classified as Haram under CoinStudy's Halal Crypto Standard due to its perpetual futures product. However Arcus presents the most directly split compliance picture of any platform CoinStudy has analyzed, and Muslim investors deserve a precise answer about each product rather than a single blanket ruling.
The perpetual futures product with up to 50x leverage is definitively Haram. Perpetual futures involve funding rate mechanisms where leveraged long traders pay funding payments to short traders or vice versa. This funding rate represents a carrying cost of leveraged speculative positions that constitutes both Maysir from the inherent speculation in leveraged positions and synthetic interest-adjacent income from predetermined-style fund transfers between position holders. At 50x leverage, a trader borrowing 4,900 USDT to control a 5,000 USDT position is paying interest on borrowed capital for speculative amplification, which is doubly prohibited as both Riba from the borrowing and Maysir from the speculation. The underlying asset being an equity stock rather than a cryptocurrency does not change this assessment. A perpetual futures contract on Apple stock with 50x leverage involves the identical prohibited mechanisms as a perpetual futures contract on Bitcoin with 50x leverage.
The spot trading of tokenized stocks of halal-classified companies is assessed differently and is closer to permissible under a separate and specific compliance reasoning. Our Shariah Board Chairman Dr. Usman Quddus confirmed in his ruling on xStocks that business with xStocks of halal companies is permissible. Arcus's Stock Tokens are economically similar instruments providing exposure to underlying equity securities backed 1:1 by Robinhood Crypto's actual stock holdings with proof of reserves published. The spot trading mechanism involves buying and selling these tokens at market prices with no leverage, no borrowing, and no funding rate mechanism. Zero spot commission fees and 24/7 market access are commercial features that do not affect the compliance assessment.
Muslim investors who want to use Arcus must apply three specific filters before trading any token. First check whether the underlying company is halal-classified under CoinStudy's framework. CoinStudy has confirmed halal classifications for Apple, Amazon, NVIDIA, Google, and other companies available on Arcus. SGOV which represents US Treasury bill exposure is explicitly Haram as it provides direct investment in interest-bearing government bonds. SPY and QQQ require AAOIFI stock screening before use. Second apply the Chairman's caution about USDG as the settlement asset, since Paxos-issued stablecoins typically use T-Bill backed reserves carrying the same concerns as USDT. Third avoid any interaction with the perpetual futures product completely regardless of the underlying asset or the promotional zero-maker-fee beta period.
