Is Ducat Protocol halal? It mints UNIT stablecoin against BTC with no interest. Is this the halal USDT alternative?
Question context
CoinStudy's answer
Research opinion from the CoinStudy Sharia team. Not a fatwa.
Ducat Protocol scores 88 out of 100 in CoinStudy's preliminary HCS analysis and is classified as Halal, making UNIT the first dollar stablecoin CoinStudy has ever verified as halal. This is not a marginal improvement over USDT. It is a fundamentally different stablecoin built on a completely different reserve model.
Every dollar stablecoin CoinStudy has analyzed before Ducat has failed the Ecosystem Riba Exposure red line for the same fundamental reason. USDT and USDC hold US Treasury bills in reserve. Those T-Bills generate interest income for Tether and Circle. DAI is backed by positions in interest-bearing lending protocols. Ethena earns perpetual futures funding rates. AUSD distributes T-Bill interest income to ecosystem partners. The interest-bearing reserve structure is the compliance failure that makes every conventional dollar stablecoin problematic under Islamic finance.
UNIT solves this problem by replacing interest-bearing reserve instruments with Bitcoin. UNIT is backed exclusively by overcollateralised BTC locked in non-custodial Taproot vaults. Bitcoin in a Taproot vault generates zero income. No interest flows from UNIT's backing to anyone. The reserve is pure Bitcoin with zero interest-bearing instruments of any kind.
The credit mechanism is equally clean. Ducat charges a single one-time origination fee of 1% when you open a vault. After that, no interest accrues on your outstanding debt. The amount you owe at vault creation is exactly the amount you owe one year later or five years later. The debt never grows. This is precisely what distinguishes Ducat from every DeFi lending protocol like Aave or Compound where debt continuously compounds with ongoing interest charges.
The structure closely resembles the Islamic finance concept of Rahn, a pledge-based credit arrangement where collateral secures a fixed debt with no ongoing interest, which Islamic jurisprudence has consistently recognized as permissible.
On the DUCAT governance token, CoinStudy verified directly with CEO David Evans that DUCAT yield comes from origination fees collected at vault creation only. Our Shariah Board Chairman Dr. Usman Quddus confirmed the applicable principle: commission on a halal product is halal. Ducat's product is halal and the origination fee revenue share distributed to DUCAT holders is therefore permissible income.
CoinStudy has listed Ducat in our Halal Airdrops section with a referral code for Muslim investors who want to participate in the mainnet alpha. Formal certification by Dr. Usman Quddus and Dr. Muhammad Ayub is in progress. Ducat has agreed to display on their official website that halal compliance has been verified by CoinStudy, the first time a Bitcoin-native stablecoin protocol has received and publicly displayed Islamic finance compliance verification.
Muslim investors who have been using USDT or USDC under the Chairman's conditional permissibility ruling with caution now have a cleaner alternative. UNIT requires no caution about the interest-bearing backend because there is no interest-bearing backend.
